This new style of the Athenian coin was struck in the second century during Athens’s decline due to the growing power of Rome.
Obverse: – Head of Athena in an Athenian helmet.
Athena was Greek mythology’s goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts.
Reverse: – Owl standing on Panathenaic Amphora
The owl was considered a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and foresight, reflecting Athena’s attributes as a goddess. The Panathenaic Amphora is an ancient Greek pottery used to hold olive oil, another symbol of Athens, which stands for the city’s famous olive oil production.
