This Ancient Roman Empire Coin is an Exact Replica of the Original.
Augustus and his successors continued to strike the large silver pieces that were equal to three denarii. The term for these coins is cistophori because the coins bore the “cista mystica” from which the name derives. This was the chief coinage of Asia Minor from the 2nd century B.C. This coin does not have the cista mystica on it but is still considered to be a cistophori coin.
“A Sphinx (symbol of Egypt). In memory of the seal of Augustus, on which, according to Suetonius, that fabulous creature was engraved.”
