Description

The Massachusetts Colony General Court granted permission in 1652 to have die prepared for silver coinage. The first coins in the series were the New England (NE) coinage, Shilling, Sixpence and Threepence. The obverse of the New England series has NE struck on the obverse and a Roman numeral on the reverse designating the valuation of the coin (XII for the Shilling, VI for the sixpence, and III for the threepence). These were the first coins struck in the British American thirteen colonies.

The Oak Tree Shilling was the next series after the Willow Tree series. The quality of the die work and using a screw press was a big improvement in the manufacture of these coins when compared to the Willow Tree Coinage. The twopence was introduced in this series and was dated 1662. It was the only coin of the four series of New England Silver coins not to have the date 1652.

The original coins are extremely rare so these coins would make a great addition to your Colonial American coin collection.
