The original 1681 Mexico City 8 Reales was struck under the reign of King Charles II at the famed Casa de Moneda mint in Mexico City — the first mint established in the Americas. Genuine examples of this cob-style “piece of eight” have been recovered from the wreck of the Joanna, an East Indiaman that sank in 1682 off Cape Agulhas, South Africa, while en route to India. The silver coins, long buried beneath sand and coral, were part of the global Spanish trade network that connected the New World to Europe and Asia.
