Description

In July 1792, the first U.S. Mint coins were struck for distribution at the request of President George Washington at a private facility, the newly established US Mint’s buildings, and machinery were not yet ready.  The half disme was struck under the guidance of newly hired Mint personnel at this private facility.  Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson recorded receiving 1500 of these coins from there.

Obverse: “LIB .  PAR . OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY . ”, Bust of Liberty, 1792 under bust.

Reverse:  “UNI. STATES OF AMERICA.”HALF DISME” below eagle and above star.

Diameter: 17 mm

Silver plated lead-free pewter, made in the USA
Packaged in a coin collecting flip with the description of coin printed on flip insert.
