Description

The coin was minted during the recession in 1838, because of a shortage of circulating coins merchants began using tokens from private mints so they could make change in their business transactions. This token reflects the antislavery sentiments in the Northeast United States at the time.

Only four examples of this token are known. One of the four recently sold at a Heritage auction for $70,500.
