American Colonial Coinage
1737 Higley Copper – Broad Axe Replica Coin
Struck by Dr. Samuel Higley from his copper mine in Granby, Connecticut. After the local protest of the threepence value, he gave his first coinage, he changes the design and added the inscription VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE but he left the Roman III value on the obverse. Legend has it that drinks at the local tavern cost threepence each and Higley would pay his bar tab with his own coins. This coin is extremely rare.
The obverse depicts a deer with the legend VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE III
The reverse has a Broad Axe and legend CUT BY WAY THROUGH
Diameter: 27.6 mm
Copper plated
Made in the USA
