MACRINUS Roman Imperial Gold Aureus 217 – 218 A.D.
Macrinus was the Roman emperor from 217 to 218 AD, becoming the first emperor not from the senatorial class. Originally a high-ranking official under Caracalla, he orchestrated the emperor’s assassination and seized power. His reign was marked by financial reforms and attempts to stabilize the empire, but he faced military unrest and opposition from the supporters of the Severan dynasty. Eventually, he was defeated in battle by the forces of Elagabalus and was executed while attempting to flee.

Reverse: SALVS PVBLICA, Salus is seated left, feeding a serpent arising from the altar.
