The Lost 1715 Treasure Fleet

On July 24th, 1715, twelve ships of the treasure fleet set sail from Havana, Cuba, bound for Spain. Tragically, on July 31st, a violent hurricane struck the fleet off the east coast of Florida. Eleven of the twelve ships were lost, and the storm claimed more than a thousand lives. The treasures onboard sank to the ocean’s depths, sparking legends and tales of the lost fortune.

The 1715 Fleet was loaded with a particularly large amount of wealth because it was the first fleet leaving for Spain after a delay in transatlantic shipping due to the War of Spanish Succession.
