On October 17, 1786, the Massachusetts General Court passed an act to establish a state-run mint to produce coins for circulation.
The council established that the design of copper coins would incorporate the figure of an Indian with a bow and arrow, a star on one side, and the word “Commonwealth”. The reverse was to have a spread eagle with words Massachusetts 1787.
The Massachusetts 1787 and 1788 cents and half cents were the first coins bearing the denomination cent and half-cent as established by Congress.
