Ancient Coinage of Sicily, Syracuse, First Democracy, before 485 BC

Syracuse was founded by Corinthian colonists around 733 B.C. Gelon, the tyrant of Gela, took possession of Syracuse in 485 B.C. and ruled until his death seven years later.
