Description

Initially an official under King Alexander I Balas, he led a revolt against Alexander’s successor Demetrius II Nicator in 144 BC.  In 138 BC Demetrius II’s brother Antiochus VII Sidetes invaded Syria and brought his rule to an end.

Obverse: Diademed and draped bust
Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ TΡYΦANOΣ AYTOKΡATOΡOΣ to right and left, eagle standing left on thunderbolt;

Diameter: 28mm

    A faithful copy of a beautiful coin. This Tryphon although good-looking, was nevertheless an usurper, and the first one to try Trump’s hairstyle. Didn’t do him much good.
