Cyrene located about 100 miles east of Benghazi in Libya. Famous for its cultivation of Silphium (also known as laser) was so closely identified with the plant that it appears on the city’s coins. Silphium was prized throughout the ancient world, for its medicinal virtues, and for perfumes and brought great wealth to the city, It is believed that the plant is now extinct.
