Description

Empress Julia Maesa 160 – 224 AD

Julia Maesa was a prominent figure in Roman history who played a crucial role in the reigns of her grandsons, Emperors Elagabalus, and Alexander Severus. As a cunning and politically astute woman, she wielded power behind the scenes, effectively shaping the course of the Roman Empire. Yet, despite her impact, her story is often overshadowed by those of her more well-known relatives.

Julia Maesa married Julius Avitus, an influential man from a noble family. They had two daughters, Julia Soaemias and Julia Mamaea. Both of their daughters would go on to become mothers of future Roman emperors—Elagabalus and Alexander Severus, respectively.
