Description

Naxos, or Naxus,  was a Greek colony on Sicily, at its northeast coast. It was founded the year before Syracuse, or 735 BC. In 403 BC Naxos was destroyed by the tyrant Dionysius of Syracuse.

 

 

Obverse:  Bearded head of Dionysos right, wearing wreath of ivy, hair tied in bunch behind head

Reverse: Naked Silenos squatting and holding thyrsos

Diameter: 26 mm

BECKER, BMC 7  Stamped on the rim
Silver-plated, Made in the USA
Packaged in a coin collecting flip with the description of coin printed on flip insert.
