The masterpiece Pallas Athenas (1657) by Rembrandt is a painting that recalls her attributes as the Goddess of warfare.

On the obverse side of the coin, one can find the image of Athena, the revered goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts. Athena held the esteemed position of being the patron deity of Athens. She is portrayed wearing a helmet, symbolizing the city’s military prowess and commitment to wisdom and knowledge. The helmet itself is adorned with intricate decorative elements, including olive leaves. These leaves pay tribute to the olive tree, a gift from Athena to the city, representing peace and prosperity. The presence of Athena on the coin establishes a strong connection between the goddess and the city, signifying the protection and guidance she bestows upon its inhabitants.

Moving to the reverse side of the coin, an owl takes center stage and is closely associated with Athena. In Greek mythology, the owl embodied wisdom and was considered a trusted companion of the goddess. Thus, the owl depicted on the Athenian Tetradrachm represents not only the city’s wisdom and intelligence but also the vigilance and watchfulness of its people. Additionally, as a nocturnal creature, the owl symbolizes Athens’ ability to thrive and prosper even during periods of darkness and uncertainty.
Alongside the owl, one can find the inscription “ΑΘΕ,” an abbreviation of “ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ,” which translates to “of the Athenians.” This inscription serves as a powerful reminder of the pride and identity held by the people of Athens, who were responsible for minting this remarkable coin. In the upper left corner are an olive twig with two leaves.
