“Brutus Imperator” celebrates Marcus Junius Brutus’s military authority, and “Lucius Plaetorius Cestianus” identifies the moneyer who issued the coin.
Brutus, one of Julius Caesar’s assassins, assumed the title of Imperator in 43 B.C. He issued this coin to commemorate Caesar’s assassination on the infamous Ides of March in 44 B.C., featuring his own portrait and a striking reverse with two daggers symbolizing the deed. Alongside Cassius, Brutus later faced defeat at the hands of Augustus and Mark Antony in 42 B.C.
