The Reign of the Twelve Caesars
The term “Twelve Caesars” refers to the sequence of Roman emperors from the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the Flavian dynasty that ruled from 27 BC to 96 AD.
The era begins with Julius Caesar and Augustus, marking the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Following Augustus, the emperors Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero continued the Julio-Claudian line, each leaving their distinct mark on the Roman Empire with their respective reigns characterized by political and personal intrigues.
After Nero, there was a brief period of chaos known as the Year of the Four Emperors, which included Galba, Otho, and Vitellius. Stability was restored by Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty, followed by his sons Titus and Domitian. The period concludes with Domitian’s assassination.
This influential series of rulers is documented by the historian Suetonius in his work “De Vita Caesarum,” written in 121 AD, where he provides an account of their public and private lives.
